Unifying Voices of Inclusion

| Today's letter is written from all of us on the SENIA team. We are all extremely grateful for this past weekend- the kick off to our 2023 Virtual Conference.
The Unifying Voices of Inclusion conference was a resounding success, bringing together a vibrant community of nearly 1700 participants who share a deep commitment to our students and advocate passionately for inclusion. We are immensely grateful for this opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals dedicated to creating an inclusive and supportive educational environment.
The weekend unfolded with three compelling keynotes and dynamic discussions in the community chat, fostering exploration and collaboration. The energy and engagement from our diverse participants made this event a truly enriching experience. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our sponsors whose generous support played a crucial role in bringing this conference to life.
In the midst of countless conversations, we were particularly moved by the words of one participant Kim Young. Kim beautifully encapsulated the essence of our collective mission and highlighted that inclusive education communicates the inherent value of every human being, encouraging us to embrace diversity and nurture connections that foster a profound sense of belonging.
As we take this moment to reflect on this inspiring weekend, we extend our deepest gratitude to all participants for their unwavering dedication to the principles that define our SENIA community. Your commitment to inclusivity and advocacy for students with diverse needs is truly commendable. SENIA Vietnam members Ton and Hoa presented on ADHD to a group of early childhood teachers on October 25th. The science behind ADHD and the brain was presented flawlessly and was received so well that attendees opted to stay past the end time to continue to learn. The focus was that ADHD is foundationally neurological, not behavioural. They dove deep into how ADHD affects areas of the brain that impact planning, analyzing, and impulse control, giving the teachers a better understanding of struggles they may

see from students in their classroom. They provided an explanation of the amygdala and the hippocampus to the attendees and made the connection of how ADHD affects emotional control and memory through these parts of the brain. The teachers that were present walked away with a better understanding of their students and many new skills to implement in their classrooms. This was a bilingual presentation done in both Vietnamese and English. It was fantastic! Thank you to UNIS Hanoi for providing the resources for this presentation.

The SENIA-Beijing chapter is delighted to witness the return to a semblance of normalcy within our community. Recently, we successfully hosted our first conference in recent years, signifying a step towards resuming our usual activities. However, the process of readjusting our lives to this new normal is ongoing.
Behind the scenes, our initial excitement obscured the awareness of the considerable demands on everyone's time—be it due to trips, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) commitments, unexpected health issues, and various other engagements. The seemingly straightforward task of determining the where and when for our conference pales in comparison to the multitude of ideas discussed during our board meetings, where the aim was to be inclusive of participants from Beijing, China, and across the globe.
With round-the-clock efforts and unwavering support from an external team comprising friends, family, and different organizations, we meticulously crafted the conference format. Opting for a blended approach, we offered both online and offline options, coupled with post-conference content accessibility, ensuring a comprehensive experience for all participants. The palpable enthusiasm within our community was heartening. We extend our gratitude to the remarkable lineup of high-quality speakers who enriched the conference with their fantastic workshops. Our vibrant community has consistently shared experiences, vulnerabilities, and learnings, fostering an environment where mistakes are embraced as opportunities for growth. Above all, the continued realization of our mission and vision is indebted to the invaluable contributions of countless individuals. What We Are Reading Torch
by Lyn Miller-Lachmann |
In the Grade 7 English class that I co teach, we are about to start a book club unit based on historical fiction. The teacher and I have worked hard to find different types of books with diverse perspectives and backgrounds and cultures. During this hunt, I came across the book Torch by Lyn Miller-Lachmann which won the LA Times Book Prize for Young Adult literature this year. The story is set in communist Czechoslovakia in 1968. One of the main characters is a teenage boy who would today be identified as having autism. While there are many big themes around politics and rights and regimes, there is always this underlying theme of how disability was treated back then. The authoritarian regime wishes to punish

and eliminate any one who thinks differently and for a boy with autism, this has the potential to be deadly. The character Tomas is protected by his father’s high rank but there are many conversations around his anti social tendencies and his difficulty in understanding the nuances of living in such a dangerous regime. There are other persecuted characters in the book too, all purposely brought to the front of a book to look more deeply at how differences were treated in history. As one character tells another “They don’t want us to be different here. They want us to be the same.” The author herself was diagnosed with Aspergers as

an adult and uses her platform as a writer to also educate and further the visibility of those seen as different. It’s a great book for young adults and can spark so many different conversations. ~ Reviewed by Lizzie Hudson |

What We Are Watching Special by Ryan O'Connell |
|
|
|
Netflix's “Special” is grabbing attention for its groundbreaking depiction of disability on screen. Its creator and star, Ryan O'Connell, plays a gay man with cerebral palsy navigating his life and career. The show's title sparks a necessary conversation about language, social norms, perceptions, and opportunities for inclusion. |
|
|
By avoiding the word "disability," we may reinforce the idea that it is something to be ashamed of. The word "special" is particularly problematic because it can be used as a euphemism, but it can also be used accurately (e.g., "special education"). There is a growing desire to move away from this word. Still, some recognize that terms like "special needs" can introduce non-disabled parents and loved ones of children with disabilities to the complex world of disability access, inclusion, accommodation rights, and support systems.
I enjoyed "Special" as it stands out as a mainstream television show for its brave exploration of the intersection between disability and sexuality. Ryan's personal experience as a person with a disability is not a mere footnote but rather a crucial part of his identity and his perception of the world, enabling the show to offer a distinct viewpoint seldom showcased in the media. The show does an excellent job of portraying how disability can manifest itself, both physically and invisibly. It shows the challenges and limitations of life and the strength, resilience, and humor that can be found in living with it.
The character Ryan is a multidimensional person with a relatable personality, and his commentary provides a candid insight into the challenges of living with a disability.
"Special" is a show that is honest and authentic to its core. It's a relatable and thought-provoking series that will leave you engaged from start to finish. The 20-minute episodes are perfect for a quick binge-watch session or a break from your daily routine. The captivating storyline will leave you thinking and talking about the show long after it's over. Overall, "Special" is a must-watch series that offers a fresh and unique perspective on disability and sexuality. ~ Reviewed by Sarah Farmer |
