PNG's Deep Energy Retrofit Pilot Program
A deep energy retrofit is a customized, comprehensive, holistic analysis and construction process to renew a building’s architectural, mechanical and electrical systems in order to drastically reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. A deep energy retrofit can be an expensive, time-consuming and complex project. PNG is offering up to $200,000 towards a deep energy retrofit project to reduce the cost and complexity for home and business owners to help them to realize the significant benefits these upgrades provide. A deep energy retrofit can include: - Envelope upgrades: wall and attic insulation, air sealing, and high-performance windows
-
Architectural design elements: natural ventilation, daylighting, shading
- Energy efficient space heating and cooling measures: hybrid heating systems and heat pumps
- Controls: optimize space heating according to schedule, occupancy and demand
-
Energy-efficient domestic hot water heaters
- Renewable energy sources: solar panels, solar-thermal systems and biomethane
Interested in being part of a deep energy retrofit project? Visit PNG's website to learn more and contact savingenergy@png.ca with a description of your project.
Note: projects must fall within PNG's service areas. |

Canadian Heat Pump Myth Buster
There are many myths about heat pumps and how they work. Efficiency Canada has released a new Canadian Heat Pump Myth Buster report with the goal of correcting these misconceptions and informing policy-makers, the media, and the public on the true facts about heat pumps with scientific-based research.
Buildings are the third largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada. With the abundance of low-carbon electricity in Canada, electrifying buildings will be essential in meeting 2050 net-zero emissions targets. Heat pumps are an integral part of this solution, due to how efficiently they use electricity to heat and cool buildings while replacing fossil fuels. Additionally, heat pumps offer building owners and occupants many benefits including increased comfort, often lower utility costs and access to efficient cooling — increasingly essential due to climate change.
Read Efficiency Canada's blog post for more details and to download a copy of the full report. |

HPCN REQUIRED COURSES - OPTION 1 TECA Principles of Moving Air
Online | Classes starting Sep 25 and Oct 18 | $659 + GST (non-members)*
This course will benefit those working in the New, Retrofit or Repair portions of the industry. It was developed to give those who are designing or installing duct systems the ability to create quiet, efficient systems which deliver the required volumes while using the least fan energy. Today, furnaces, heat pumps and ventilation systems require larger volumes of air to be moved. Duct fitting shape, the number of fittings, air filters, coils all contribute to reduced flow in ductwork.
TECA Heat Loss/Heat Gain Course
Online | Classes Starting Oct 2 | $385 + GST (non-members)*
The course is intended to help participants perform accurate and code-compliant heat loss and heat gain calculations. The BC Building Code calls for CSA F280-12 for calculation of heat loss and heat gain, for Part 9 buildings. The TECA Heat Loss / Gain software has been designed to give users an accurate and simple way to calculate heating and cooling loads by the CSA F280-12 calculation methods.

| HPCN REQUIRED COURSES - OPTION 2 70% off - HRAI Basic Principles of Residential Ventilation Online | On-Demand | $26.78*
Through this online course, participants are introduced to the basic principles of residential ventilation. The course starts by defining the concepts known as “House as a System”; the flow of air, heat and water and how these impact natural ventilation (i.e., air leakage). The course includes a description of the theory of mechanical airflow including air pressure, duct resistance and fan ratings. A review of the impact on combustion appliances, humidity levels and indoor air quality is also provided.
HRAI Residential Heat Loss & Heat Gain Calculations
Online | Next classes TBD | $407.93*
Based on the CSA Standard F280-12, students get a firsthand introduction of the basic principles of building science and heat loss/gain. Through various in-class exercises, the student will learn how to determine the thermal resistance (R value) of various building assemblies, such as walls and ceilings. Accurately, calculate room by room heat loss and gain while considering the influences of occupancy, exposure, ventilation, air leakage across the building envelope and more.
