Construction Mentorship Program
Building Builders is the only construction mentorship program serving all of BC’s construction industry. Funded by the Government of Canada STAR program, Building Builders is free and filled with valuable benefits for mentors and mentees because it is built by construction industry experts.
Looking for a mentor?
Whether you are someone just considering a career in the construction trades, or already on your path in the industry, Building Builders can match you with a mentor who can help you get where you want to go. The right mentor can help you build your career in construction by giving you advice on important things like which trade to pursue, how to talk to your supervisor, or when to make a change. They can connect you with opportunities and share insights that will make the industry easier to understand.
Visit the Building Builders "Find a Mentor" page for more information. Looking to become a mentor?
You do not need special mentoring skills or experience to be an effective mentor. You do not need all the answers. If you have been working in the construction industry for ten years and are willing to share your knowledge, you can make a real difference in a young tradesperson’s career. Plus, Building Builders can contribute to wages if you offer your mentee work experience.
Visit the Building Builders "Become a Mentor" page for more information. |

Important Changes to FortisBC Rebates
You may have heard that there are some upcoming changes to FortisBC’s rebate and incentive programs for natural gas equipment. On June 30, 2023, the B.C. Government made a regulation change that discontinues FortisBC’s ability to offer rebates and incentives for gas equipment below 100 per cent energy efficient. This includes rebates to replace gas equipment like furnaces, boilers, combination systems, water heaters and fireplaces. These changes mean customers can still apply for rebates for eligible equipment until the end of the year, with all invoices dated, on or before December 31, 2023.

How Much Does a Deep Energy Retrofit Cost?
Retrofit Canada tackled this tricky question in a recent news story.
Their findings? If you want to make an old house net-zero with a one-shot, all-in deep retrofit, homeowners could be looking at costs of $100,000 to $200,000, but it depends on a number of factors.
In their article - written to consumers - they talk about the factors that affect costs and four things homeowners should know about deep retrofit costs, including whether a retrofit is completed all in one shot or in a series of carefully planned stages.
Check out the article on the Retrofit Canada website and let us know what you think about their conclusions. |

| HPCN REQUIRED COURSES - OPTION 1 TECA Principles of Moving Air Online | Classes starting Oct 18 | $659 + GST (non-members)*
This course will benefit those working in the New, Retrofit or Repair portions of the industry. It was developed to give those who are designing or installing duct systems the ability to create quiet, efficient systems which deliver the required volumes while using the least fan energy. Today, furnaces, heat pumps and ventilation systems require larger volumes of air to be moved. Duct fitting shape, the number of fittings, air filters, coils all contribute to reduced flow in ductwork.
TECA Heat Loss/Heat Gain Course
Online | Classes Starting Oct 2 and Nov 6 | $385 + GST (non-members)*
The course is intended to help participants perform accurate and code-compliant heat loss and heat gain calculations. The BC Building Code calls for CSA F280-12 for calculation of heat loss and heat gain, for Part 9 buildings. The TECA Heat Loss / Gain software has been designed to give users an accurate and simple way to calculate heating and cooling loads by the CSA F280-12 calculation methods.
*HPCN members are eligible for a 100% reimbursement plus contribution towards wages. Visit homeperformance.ca/HPCN to learn more about membership and training subsidies. |

| HPCN REQUIRED COURSES - OPTION 2 70% off - HRAI Basic Principles of Residential Ventilation Online | On-Demand | $28.04*
Through this online course, participants are introduced to the basic principles of residential ventilation. The course starts by defining the concepts known as “House as a System”; the flow of air, heat and water and how these impact natural ventilation (i.e., air leakage). The course includes a description of the theory of mechanical airflow including air pressure, duct resistance and fan ratings. A review of the impact on combustion appliances, humidity levels and indoor air quality is also provided.
70% off - HRAI Residential Heat Loss & Heat Gain Calculations
Online | Classes starting Sep 19 | $428.40*
Based on the CSA Standard F280-12, students get a firsthand introduction of the basic principles of building science and heat loss/gain. Through various in-class exercises, the student will learn how to determine the thermal resistance (R value) of various building assemblies, such as walls and ceilings. Accurately, calculate room by room heat loss and gain while considering the influences of occupancy, exposure, ventilation, air leakage across the building envelope and more.
*HPCN members are eligible for a 100% reimbursement plus contribution towards wages. Visit homeperformance.ca/HPCN to learn more about membership and training subsidies. |
