OPEN DISCUSSION
Safeguarding Canada's Interests: Draft EU AI Regulations
Co-Chair, Jim Balsillie, and Executive Director, Keith Jansa, facilitated an open discussion with Members on safeguarding Canadian interests in the proposed AI Regulations out of the EU. Comments highlighted prudence on achieving adequacy between Canada and the EU to meet the needs of Canadian AI exporters. It was noted the draft EU regulations require AI systems to be third-party tested, certified and inspected under the governance of Member State national accreditation bodies - and provides a route for Canada to achieve mutual recognition of conformity assessment results, including recognition of its national standard (CAN/CIOSC 101:2019. Ethical design and use of automated decision systems), if asserted.
- Weigh in on the Council pursuing accreditation as a conformity assessment body to carry out the activities of notified bodies under the EU regulation (Article 39).
-
The Department of Global Affairs Canada’s Technical Barriers and Regulation’s Division is seeking views from CIO Strategy Council members on whether Canada should request the European Union to make changes to its draft regulations governing AI systems that would assist Canadian exporters of AI products.
You are asked to submit your input by December 31, 2021 to Stuart Palmer, Senior Trade Policy Officer, Global Affairs Canada via email at stuart.palmer@international.gc.ca copying his colleague Jennifer Soucy at jennifer.soucy@international.gc.ca.
