Welcome to our monthly round-up of activity in the International Hospital Federation Secretariat and featured news highlights from our members and partners. Workforce challenges in the spotlight Sharing strategies on recruitment and retention of healthcare workers Workforce challenges are a concern for healthcare leaders worldwide: increasing demands and stress on healthcare workers, decreasing job satisfaction and staff retention. On 5 May, the IHF’s Association Leaders Circle held a workshop to exchange on this important topic.
How to respond to the workforce issue: Guest podcast This month we are sharing a podcast from the American Hospital Association featuring Ron Werft, president and CEO of Cottage Health, California, and Chair of the AHA’s workforce task force. He speaks with Robyn Begley, the AHA’s chief nursing officer and CEO of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership, about the aims of the task force, and how it is helping lead the development of resources for the field.
Healthcare workforce tackling climate change As well as the carbon emissions of hospitals, the global healthcare workforce is also on the frontline when it comes to facing the consequences of climate change for population health. At the Geneva Health Forum in May, the IHF team participated in panels discussing climate change and healthcare. Sonia Roschnik shared insights into mitigating the environmental impact of healthcare, and Sara Perazzi discussed examples of actions the workforce can take.World Hospital Congress | IHF Awards

Join this series of three workshops, hosted by the IHF Telehealth SIG, commencing on 7 July 2022.
Online strategic course for hospital executives with exclusive coaching offer for the IHF's network Hospital Management: The Simulation and the Pandemic is an online course designed especially for hospital leaders, running from 22 to 25 June. Held by the SDA Bocconi School of Management in partnership with Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, the course includes a comprehensive, strategic exercise for the executive leadership team of a hospital. Participants who register using the special code "IHF22" will benefit from 1 free online coaching session from SDA Bocconi Faculty following the course.
Leading the way on sustainable healthcare at Africa ExCon The IHF will host a session at Africa Health ExCon (5 to 7 June 2022) on the actions that healthcare leadership can take for sustainability. Chaired by Dr Risto Miettunen, Past President and Honorary Member of the IHF, this session will feature healthcare leaders who are balancing complex, competing commitments while leading transformation for a more sustainable healthcare sector.
Healthcare and climate on the agenda at HIMSS Europe With a focus on adoption and integration of technology in all healthcare settings, the IHF’s CEO, Ron Lavater, will be in Helsinki at HIMSS European Health Conference on 14 to 16 June 2022. Ron will be speaking on the panel for the session on “Climate Crisis: Healthcare‘s Responsibility to Our Planet”.
Upcoming events from the IHF, our members and partners: Membership | Governance Get to know the IHF’s Governing Council Members Our Governing Council is composed of 25 elected members and is responsible for the overall governance of the affairs of the IHF, within the boundaries of the authority of, or authorization by, the General Assembly. This month, we are pleased to introduce two of our Governing Council Members: Deborah J. Bowen, IHF President, and Dr Adelvânio F. Morato, Brazilian Hospital Federation.
Dr Kim Trust Fund broadens access to the IHF and its activities Thanks to sponsorship from the Dr Kim Trust Fund, the IHF is delighted to welcome three members from low income and lower-middle income countries. The not-for-profit Indian Hospital Association (Vadodara) manages a programme of training and activities in various areas of hospital and healthcare service management in India. Kindoya Hospital, Sierra Leone, is a private sector hospital with a well-established corporate social responsibility reach, serving rural populations especially supporting HIV care, young children, and maternity. The Zambia Association of Private Hospitals is a non-profit organization promoting and protecting the development and maintenance of high standards of private health hospitals and their staff. The continuing membership of the Amiri Medical Complex, Afghanistan, is also made possible through sponsorship by the Trust Fund. And thanks to the Trust Fund and one of its donors, the Jackson Healthcare Foundation, 6 participants in this year’s Young Executive Leaders programme are sponsored to join the 45th World Hospital Congress. We are excited to meet these young leaders from Egypt, the Philippines, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe in Dubai in November.
